Forest of Wolves Walkthrough – Black Myth: Wukong

Forest of Wolves is not only the starting point for the legendary journey, but also a “training ground” to test the player’s skills and bravery. Don’t worry if you are a “newbie”, this guide is designed so that all players, whether beginners or experienced, can easily grasp and conquer the Forest of Wolves. Let ThinkPlay begin this exciting adventure with you!

Before Starting Chapter 1

Before officially stepping into the Forest of Wolves, make sure you have thoroughly grasped the following. Have you completed the Prologue – where you had the chance to test your skills against Erlang Shen? Completing this part not only helps you familiarize yourself with the combat mechanics but also reveals a fascinating part of Black Myth: Wukong’s storyline.

Remember, Black Myth: Wukong utilizes a diverse system of Stances (fighting stances) and Spells. Each Stance has its own strengths and weaknesses, suitable for different types of enemies. Similarly, Spells can support offense, defense, or crowd control. Take your time to explore and experiment with different Stances and Spells to find the fighting style that best suits you.

If you’ve ventured through previous areas (this is not mandatory), review your inventory. You might possess useful items that can aid you in the Forest of Wolves.

Journey through the Forest of Wolves

Front Hills

From the starting point, you will enter the Front Hills area. Move cautiously, defeat the first two enemies, a Wolf Scout and a Wolf Swordsman, to get accustomed to the pace of combat. This is a great opportunity to practice the skills you’ve learned.

As you continue forward, you’ll come to a fork in the road. Turn left, and you will encounter a Wolf Scout guarding a small chest. Defeat him and open the chest to receive Tiny Pieces of Gold – which you can sell for Will later.

Go straight, and you will face a Wolf Stalwart – a stronger enemy with a large axe. Be careful with his powerful swings, dodge, and counterattack appropriately. Defeating the Wolf Stalwart will unlock the first Keeper’s Shrine in the Front Hills area.

Defeating the Wolf Stalwart will unlock the first Keeper’s Shrine in the Front Hills area.

At this Shrine, take your time to Rest and familiarize yourself with the Enhance Abilities and Merchandise interfaces.

Leaving the Shrine, continue your journey, and you will encounter a few more Wolves, including a Wolf Soldier – an enemy capable of blocking attacks.

Cross the bridge, and you will reach a much more open area. Defeat the Wolf Soldier and the Wolf Stalwart guarding the Purple Lingzhi at the foot of the large tree.

Following the path leading down, you have two choices: go towards the stream on the left or go straight to confront the first Mini-Boss. Head towards the stream, and you will find Gentian and Purple Lingzhi.

At the end of the stream, you will see a stone statue head. Interact with it to obtain the Skandha of Form – a mysterious key item.

Head upstream, and you will encounter Croakies – enemies that attack from a distance and explode upon death. Be careful! Nearby, you will also find Jade Lotus.

Cross the bridge, and you will face a Crow Diviner. He is agile and has unpredictable attacks. Focus on dodging and counterattacking.

Return to the initial fork in the road, go straight, and you will face the Bullguard – the first Mini-Boss of the area. He is quite “tanky” and has powerful attacks. This is where you need to utilize all the skills you’ve learned.

Defeating the Bullguard will grant you the Immobilize Spell.

After defeating the Bullguard, go through the gate, and you will arrive in another forested area. Follow the sloping path to the left, defeat the enemies and collect the Aged Ginseng.

At the end of the path, you will reach a wooden balcony. Here, you can activate the first Meditation SpotThe Arbor – receiving free Sparks.

Opposite the balcony, there is a tunnel leading to the second Keeper’s Shrine. Rest, buy items (if needed), and prepare for the next area.

Outside the Forest

Leaving the Shrine, you will temporarily transform into a Golden Cicada. In this form, you can fly around and scout the Outside the Forest area without being detected by enemies. However, pay attention to the energy bar in the bottom left corner, as it limits your flight time.

Outside the Forest is a vast area with many hidden secrets. Near the Shrine, you will see a bridge, and on the other side of the bridge is the Wandering Wight – an extremely difficult Mini-Boss. ThinkPlay recommends you temporarily skip him and come back later when you are stronger.

Instead, head to the left, following the fallen trees, and you will find Purple Lingzhi and Aged Ginseng. Continue on, and you will reach a small peak with collapsed pillars. Here, you will find a Wolf guarding a few pots. Break them to receive Will.

Near this peak is a bridge, where a Bandit Chief is guarding a chest. He has a large sword and very dangerous multi-hit attacks. Be careful to dodge and wait for an opportunity to counterattack when he finishes his combo. Defeating him will grant you Evil Repelling Medicament and Tiny Pieces of Gold.

Continue across the bridge, and you will encounter a Wolf Archer. Use Staff Twirl (by holding down the L2/LT button) to deflect the arrows, then quickly approach and defeat him. From here, you can continue to the far side of the stream or return to explore the previous area.

Head up to the plateau, and you will find Aged Ginseng. Going down the slope, you will encounter a Ginsengling – an enemy hides in the form of a ginseng plant. Be careful with its attacks from its roots. Defeating a Ginsengling will grant you more materials than collecting a regular plant.

Now, you can cross the stream to battle more Wolf enemies or find a small path on the left leading to a waterfall. Here, you will find Jade Lotus and face a Crow Diviner meditating.

On the far side of the stream, you will find more materials and a path leading to Guangzhi – the next important Mini-Boss.

Guangzhi uses a fiery twinblade, moves quickly, and has multi-hit attacks. Focus on dodging, use Immobilize to control him, and utilize the Red Tides Transformation (if you have it) to deal massive damage.

Defeating Guangzhi will grant you the Red Tides Transformation – a powerful transformation skill that allows you to use Guangzhi’s own fiery attacks.

After defeating Guangzhi, don’t forget to Ring the Bell nearby. This is the first of three bells you need to ring to unlock the secret area.

From here, you have two options: return to face the Wandering Wight (quite difficult) or go through the tunnel to reach Guanyin Temple.

Note: Near the waterfall area, there is a Buddha Statue, which is a secret entrance leading to Red Loong a hidden boss. However, you need the Loong Scale from Chapter 2 to unlock it.

Guanyin Temple

After passing through the tunnel and following the wooden scaffolding, you’ll arrive at Guanyin Temple. Before entering, rest at the Shrine here and explore the surroundings:

Craft Armor: You can now use the armor crafting feature. Collect Yarn and Will to craft the Pilgrim’s Set. This set, especially the Pilgrim’s Headband, provides a health regeneration effect while sprinting, which is very useful.

Loot: Near the Shrine, you’ll find Purple Lingzhi and a wolf statue with a Green Wisp – interact to get a small amount of Will. Opposite this, near a small archway, there’s a chest containing Tiny Pieces of Gold and Stone Spirit. On the far side of the entrance area, you’ll find Gentian and some pots and jars that can be broken to collect Will.

Once you’re fully prepared, enter the temple’s courtyard. Here, you’ll face Lingxuzi – the first Yaoguai King and the main Boss of Forest of Wolves.

Lingxuzi is a giant, ferocious wolf with powerful attacks. However, he also has weaknesses:

Slow: Lingxuzi’s attacks are powerful but quite slow and predictable.

Weak to Fire: Lingxuzi is vulnerable to fire. Utilize the Red Tides Transformation to deal massive damage.

Susceptible to Immobilize: Immobilize will prevent Lingxuzi from moving, creating opportunities for you to attack.

ThinkPlay‘s recommended strategy:

Keep Your Distance: Lingxuzi often starts the fight with a leaping attack. Dodge this attack and maintain a safe distance.

Observe and Dodge: Lingxuzi has various attacks, including claw swipes, bites, roars, and a leaping slam from above. Observe carefully and Dodge accordingly.

Attack When He’s Vulnerable: After Lingxuzi performs an attack, he’ll have a brief recovery period. This is your chance to attack.

Use Immobilize and Red Tides Transformation: Use Immobilize to restrain Lingxuzi, then unleash the Red Tides Transformation to maximize your damage output.

Be Patient: Don’t be hasty, wait for the right opportunities, and take down Lingxuzi.

Defeating Lingxuzi will reward you with the Grey Wolf Mask and a Mind Core – an important upgrade material.

Don’t leave just yet! Explore the area, and you’ll find Mushrooms, Jade Lotus, and a large chest containing Tiny Pieces of Gold and Yarn.

Most importantly, in the main building, to the left of the altar, you’ll find the Celestial Jade Lotus Pill – an item that permanently increases your maximum health. Don’t miss it! After collecting everything, exit Guanyin Temple through the rear exit to reach the next area.

Congratulations on overcoming the Forest of Wolves! Now it’s time to summarize and prepare for the next chapter.

Leaving Guanyin Temple through the rear exit, you’ll arrive at a new Shrine the starting point for The Bamboo Grove area.

The Forest of Wolves is a challenging but also very exciting opening chapter in Black Myth: Wukong. You have overcome the main Boss, discovered many secrets, and learned many important skills.
