In this guide, I will walk you through unlocking and exploring the Ancient Guanyin Temple, uncovering all its secrets, from the location of the three sacred bells to defeating the hidden boss, Elder Jinchi. Rest assured, with my extensive “battle-hardened” experience, I will use clear and simple language, along with helpful tips, so you can easily conquer this challenge. Let’s get started!
Unlocking Ancient Guanyin Temple
To set foot in the Ancient Guanyin Temple, you need to perform a special task: ring the three mysterious bells scattered throughout the Black Wind Mountain area. The good news is you can ring them in any order you like. Here’s a detailed guide to the location of each bell:
Bell 1: Forest of Wolves
First, teleport to Outside the Forest Shrine.
From here, look to your left, and you’ll see a path leading uphill. Follow this path, and you’ll reach a rope bridge crossing a stream.
Continue straight across the bridge, and you’ll encounter a Yaoguai Chief (an elite type of monster) named Guangzhi – a tough optional boss with the ability to use fire. Get ready to fight him with all you’ve got.
After defeating Guangzhi, you will receive the Red Tides Transformation Spell (a transformation spell that allows you to deal fire damage).
Look towards the end of the arena where you just fought Guangzhi, and you’ll see the first bell. Approach it and interact to ring the bell.
Note: Don’t miss out on the Red Tides Transformation Spell; it’s a very useful spell!
Bell 2: Bamboo Grove – Snake Trail
From the Forest of Wolves area, continue your journey to the Bamboo Grove.
Find the Snake Trail area – a winding path with many poisonous snakes. Be careful!
Follow this path, and you’ll encounter another Yaoguai Chief (elite monster) named Guangmou. He can summon snakes to attack you, so be careful to dodge and counterattack appropriately.
After you’ve dealt with Guangmou, look to the left side of that area. You’ll see a slope with stairs, go up those stairs.
The second bell awaits you there. Go ahead and ring it.
Note: Remember to defeat Guangmou, or he’ll be a nuisance.
Bell 3: Bamboo Grove – Marsh of the White Mists
Leaving the Snake Trail area, continue deeper into the Bamboo Grove, and you’ll arrive at the Marsh of the White Mists.
Traverse this marsh, and you’ll face the Whiteclad Noble – a rather challenging Character Boss (a special type of boss, usually with their own story). Focus on dodging his wide-range attacks and find opportunities to counter.
After defeating the Whiteclad Noble, don’t rush into Black Wind Cave just yet! Instead, look for a small path to the left.
Follow this path, and you’ll reach a large plaza behind the marsh. Here, you’ll see a rather “gruesome” sight: a wolf hanging upside down from a tree. Don’t be afraid, keep moving forward.
The third and final bell is right behind it. Ring the bell!
Immediately after ringing the third bell, you’ll be instantly teleported to the Ancient Guanyin Temple. Get ready for the challenges ahead!
Okay, great! We’ve finally made it to the Ancient Guanyin Temple. Let’s explore this mysterious area!
Exploring Ancient Guanyin Temple
As soon as you set foot in the Ancient Guanyin Temple, you’ll notice something’s different. That’s right, you’ve been transported back in time, to a point before the temple was ravaged by fire. Everything looks dilapidated and ruined but also holds many intriguing secrets.
First, find and activate the Shrine in the entrance plaza. This is crucial, as it allows you to fast travel to and from the Ancient Guanyin Temple with ease.
Note: The Shrine at the Ancient Guanyin Temple has a special feature: it has a shop that sells “unique” items that you can’t find anywhere else in the game. Let’s find out what those items are in the next section.
The Shop at the Shrine
As mentioned earlier, the Shrine at the Ancient Guanyin Temple boasts a special shop where you can acquire some incredibly useful items. Here’s a list of the “hot” items you should grab as soon as possible:
Evil Repelling Medicament (x2): – Temporarily grants immunity to negative status effects.
Longevity Decoction (x2): – Restores a large amount of health.
Silk (x2): – Material for upgrading equipment.
Yaoguai Core (x2): – Material for crafting high-level items.
Note: These items are quite rare in the early stages of the game, so don’t miss the opportunity to stock up. Make sure you have enough Will (the in-game currency) to purchase them!
Collecting Items
The Ancient Guanyin Temple area hides many valuable items. Keep a keen eye on your surroundings so you don’t miss any of them.
In particular, directly opposite the Shrine, you’ll see a withered tree. Search around this tree, and you’ll discover three hidden treasure chests.
Opening these three chests will grant you:
Plenty of Will (currency).
2 Yarn (thread).
3 Stone Spirit.
Guanyin’s Prayer Beads: This is an extremely useful arm gear; it temporarily increases your maximum health and mana whenever you collect Lingering Will (a form of experience point dropped by defeated enemies).
Before facing Elder Jinchi – the hidden boss of Ancient Guanyin Temple – I strongly recommend you return to the Forest of Wolves area and defeat the Wandering Wight if you haven’t already.
The reason is that the Wandering Wight has many similar attacks and battle mechanics as Elder Jinchi. Practicing with the Wandering Wight first will help you familiarize yourself with the moves and better prepare for the difficult battle ahead.
Furthermore, if you defeat Elder Jinchi first, the Wandering Wight will disappear permanently. This means you will miss the opportunity to obtain the Curio (a special type of item) and Spirit – two useful items dropped by the Wandering Wight.
Defeating Elder Jinchi – Secret Boss
Elder Jinchi is a Yaoguai King and the hidden boss of the Ancient Guanyin Temple area. He is not only tougher than the Wandering Wight but also possesses unique battle mechanics that require your utmost focus and a proper strategy.
Phase 1
Around the arena, you will see many slow-moving, bronze-colored corpses. Initially, they do not attack you.
You can kill these corpses with a single hit, and each corpse destroyed will restore a small amount of your health.
However, after a while, Elder Jinchi will “activate” these corpses. They will glow and start chasing you. If they touch you, they will explode and deal damage.
Most importantly, when Elder Jinchi is reduced to about half health, he will teleport to the center of the arena and begin to “absorb” the surrounding corpses. Each corpse absorbed will restore a significant amount of his health.
Focus on attacking Elder Jinchi, prioritizing dodging his spinning attacks, ground slams, and energy blasts.
Use Immobilize and the Spirit Attack from the Wandering Wight’s Spirit to stun and interrupt his dangerous attacks.
Take advantage of the time when Elder Jinchi performs the ground slam to kill the surrounding corpses, both restoring your health and preventing him from recovering.
Be especially careful with the charged energy blast. Elder Jinchi will gather energy and summon spirits to enhance the power of this attack, while also delaying the timing of the blast. Pay close attention and dodge at the right moment.
Phase 2 (after losing some health)
Elder Jinchi will become “enraged” and activate the surrounding corpses.
At this point, stop attacking him and focus on running. Lure the glowing corpses to chase you, then quickly move away so they explode without hitting you.
Only attack Elder Jinchi when there are no glowing corpses near you.
Phase 3 (around half health)
Elder Jinchi teleports to the center of the arena and begins absorbing corpses to restore health
This is when you need to “race” against him. Quickly move around the arena, killing the corpses before they can reach Elder Jinchi.Elder Jinchi.
Use quick attacks to conserve stamina and kill as many corpses as possible.
Preventing Elder Jinchi from recovering is key to winning this phase.
Continue to maintain the above strategy, focusing on attacking when the opportunity arises and paying attention to the activated corpse waves.
Use the Red Tides Transformation Spell immediately after Elder Jinchi finishes his healing process to maximize your damage output.
After defeating Elder Jinchi, don’t forget to return to the location of the hanging wolf (near the third bell) and interact with it.
You will receive the Fireproof Mantle Vessel.
Now, you are ready to continue your journey to conquer Black Myth: Wukong. Proceed to Chapter 2 – Yellow Sand, Desolate Dusk with confidence and newfound power.
