I. Walkthrough Sections

0. Prologue Walkthrough

The game kicks off with an epic and cinematic prologue that sets the stage for the grand adventure ahead. You’ll witness a breathtaking confrontation between the legendary Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) in his prime and the formidable gods of the Celestial Court.

During this prologue, you’ll briefly take control of Sun Wukong himself as he engages in a thrilling battle with Erlang Shan, a powerful deity. Don’t worry about losing this fight – it’s designed to be unwinnable, serving as an introduction to the game’s combat mechanics and controls.

Pay close attention to Sun Wukong’s special moves during this encounter, such as “A Pluck of Many” and “Cloud Step”. These powerful techniques will be utilized later in the game by the Destined One, the protagonist you’ll embody throughout your journey. The prologue concludes with a captivating cutscene that lays the foundation for the story to unfold.

1. Forest of Wolves Walkthrough

1.1. Forest of Wolves: Front Hills

Your adventure as the Destined One begins in the heart of the Forest of Wolves. Emerging from the form of a peach (a clever trick to deceive the local wildlife!), you’ll immediately encounter a group of Wolf Guais (wolf-like demons). This is your first opportunity to test your combat skills – defeat them and proceed north along the path.

At a fork in the road, head left to engage a Wolf Scout guarding a valuable chest. After claiming its contents, return to the fork and venture right, where you’ll face a slightly tougher Wolf Stalwart. Dispatching this foe will unlock the “Front Hills” Keeper’s Shrine, a place of respite and guidance.

Keeper’s Shrines are safe havens scattered throughout the game world where you can rest, replenish your resources, and receive valuable information from the Keepers, enigmatic beings who oversee the land.

From the Shrine, continue forward, defeating any wolves that stand in your path. Cross the bridge and navigate the open area that follows. To progress the story, stick to the main path. However, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can jump down into the riverbed and follow it upstream for an optional encounter with a Crow Diviner, a powerful Yaoguai (demon) that offers a good challenge and valuable experience early on.

Returning to the main path, continue right until you encounter the Bullguard, your first major boss battle. Before engaging, take a detour to the left towards a large head on the ground. Interact with it to collect the Skandha of Form, the first of several Skandhas hidden throughout the game. Collecting all the Skandhas is crucial for unlocking a powerful ability later in your journey.

Now, prepare yourself for the Bullguard. This fight serves as a tutorial for mastering dodging and utilizing the game’s freezing mechanic. Once you deplete half of the Bullguard’s health, the Keeper will bestow upon you the Immobilize spell, a crucial tool for crowd control and interrupting enemy attacks. Utilize this new ability to finish the fight and claim your victory.

Beyond the gate the Bullguard was guarding, you’ll encounter another fork in the road. The right path leads to some valuable medicine ingredients, while the left path continues the main story. Following the left path will lead you to The Arbor, your first Meditation Spot. Meditation Spots are essential for character progression, allowing you to spend accumulated “Sparks” to unlock new skills and enhance your abilities.

Across from The Arbor, you’ll find a crevice in the wall. Enter this passage and follow the golden trail to reach the next Shrine, “Outside the Forest”.

1.2. Forest of Wolves: Outside the Forest

Upon interacting with the “Outside the Forest” Shrine, the Keeper will temporarily transform you into a Golden Cicada. This unique form allows you to scout the surrounding area, revealing hidden paths, enemies, and collectibles. You can use this opportunity to explore the area thoroughly or skip ahead to the next objective. However, keep in mind that this transformation is temporary, and you cannot revert back to it once you return to your normal form.

If you choose to prioritize the main story objectives, follow the path to the right until you pass a large, imposing Yaoguai known as Wandering Wight. Continue past him to reach a safe zone.

Teleport back to the Shrine and proceed forward, defeating the wolves along the way. At the fork, head left and unlock a chest after dealing with a group of wolves. Near the stream, you’ll encounter a Ginseng plant that has transformed into a monster. Be cautious, as this creature can deal significant damage.

Follow the stream to its source, where you’ll find another Crow Diviner meditating. Return to the bridge and take out the archer stationed there. From the bridge, head towards the shrine where you’ll encounter Guangzhi, a formidable wolf Yaoguai wielding a flaming double-edged polearm. Ensure you’re well-prepared before engaging this boss.

When ready, confront Guangzhi. He’s a swift and aggressive opponent, so prioritize dodging his attacks, particularly his charge. Utilize the Immobilize spell to interrupt his attacks and create openings for your own. Defeating Guangzhi will unlock the Red Tides Transformation, a powerful ability that allows you to temporarily assume his form and unleash devastating attacks. This is one of the most valuable skills in the early game, so be sure to utilize it frequently.

After the battle, locate the Bell attached to a small shrine near Guangzhi’s arena and ring it. This is crucial for unlocking Chapter 1’s hidden area later on.

Before leaving the area, consider a detour to face the optional boss, Red Loong. This hidden dragon boss can be found near a giant waterfall marked by a Buddha statue. However, to access this area, you’ll need the Loong Scale, a key item obtained in Chapter 2. If you have the Loong Scale, interact with the waterfall to initiate the challenging battle against Red Loong. Be prepared for his lightning-fast attacks and focus on targeting the vessels on his back when he stumbles to deal significant damage.

If you haven’t acquired the Loong Scale yet, don’t worry, you can always return later. For now, retrace your steps back to the area where you encountered Wandering Wight. Follow the path through a tunnel and across wooden platforms to reach the “Guanyin Temple” Shrine.

1.3. Forest of Wolves: Guanyin Temple

Upon reaching the “Guanyin Temple” Shrine, take a moment to rest and save your progress. As you venture deeper into the temple complex, a massive wolf will ambush you from the rooftops. This is Lingxuzi, the first Yaoguai King you’ll encounter in the game.

While Lingxuzi may appear intimidating, he’s an ideal target for your newly acquired Red Tides Transformation. Utilize this powerful ability to deal significant damage and overwhelm him. Be mindful of his bite and two-part swipe combo, dodging them effectively to avoid taking unnecessary damage.

After defeating Lingxuzi, explore the temple thoroughly. You’ll find a valuable Celestial Jade Lotus Pill, which permanently increases your maximum health. Don’t miss this crucial upgrade! Once you’ve looted the area, exit the temple through the rear entrance. Follow the glittering trail that leads you to the “Back Hills” Shrine, marking the end of your exploration of the Forest of Wolves.

2. Bamboo Grove Walkthrough

2.1. Bamboo Grove: Back Hills

After resting and replenishing your resources at the “Back Hills” Shrine, you’ll find yourself in a small valley teeming with enemies. Before charging in, take a moment to explore the area. Hug the left wall as you proceed forward, and you’ll discover a hidden cave.

Inside the cave, you’ll encounter a peculiar Horse Guai named Ma Tianba. This friendly creature plays a significant role in a side quest that spans multiple chapters. Be sure to exhaust all dialogue options with Ma Tianba to initiate the quest. You’ll also find The Cavern Meditation Spot within the cave, offering another opportunity to enhance your abilities.

Once you’ve explored the cave, continue following the path downwards. You can wander around the water’s edge to collect some Wills, ethereal spirits that restore your health. However, to progress the main story, head up the stone stairs and cross the bridge that comes into view.

As you cross the bridge, you’ll notice a familiar trail of glittering particles. Follow this trail to the right and up some stairs to find a gazebo containing a golden chest. Inside, you’ll discover a variety of valuable medicines to aid you on your journey

2.2. Bamboo Grove: Snake Trail

Upon reaching the “Snake Trail” Shrine, you’ll immediately be confronted by another Crow Diviner. Defeat this formidable foe and take the opportunity to rest and adjust your equipment and skills at the Shrine.

After preparing yourself, head up the stairs near the Shrine. You’ll encounter a peculiar old man named Yuan Shoucheng reciting poetry. This sage from the “Journey to the West” novel plays a crucial role in your journey, as he will teach you the art of Spirit Cultivation. Spirit Cultivation allows you to capture and utilize the spirits of defeated enemies, similar to the Pokémon series. Engage in conversation with Yuan Shoucheng to unlock this valuable ability.

If you previously defeated Wandering Wight, return to the “Snake Trail” Shrine and select the “Retrieve Spirits” option. This will allow you to add Wandering Wight’s powerful spirit to your arsenal, significantly boosting your defense. You can further enhance his spirit’s abilities by using the Blood of the Iron Bull dropped by the Bullguard.

With your spirits ready for battle, head back to where you encountered Yuan Shoucheng and cross the bridge. Continue forward, passing through a field of bones, until you reach a fork in the road. Instead of heading under the bridge, follow the stream to the right. Along the way, you’ll encounter several green Will spirits, which offer valuable health restoration.

Following the stream will lead you to an encounter with Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang, an optional frog boss. This battle provides a good opportunity to practice your combat skills and test out your newly acquired spirits.

After defeating Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang, collect his spirit and a Tadpole item. Continue following the stream, and you’ll eventually be led back to the main path. Take a moment to rest and heal at a nearby Shrine before proceeding.

Return to the fork in the road and head under the bridge. After a short walk, you’ll find yourself in a bamboo forest. Be cautious, as this area is home to wandering Snake Patrollers and Skeletal Snakes that can ambush you if you get too close. To progress the story, locate a small opening to the right, illuminated by torches.

This opening leads to an encounter with Guangmou, an old colleague of Guangzhi. Guangmou is a formidable opponent who utilizes ranged attacks and poison sprays to whittle down your health. Be prepared to dodge frequently and utilize your spirits effectively. Activating the Red Tides Transformation during this battle will trigger some interesting dialogue, providing further insight into the lore and character relationships.

After defeating Guangmou, locate the Bell situated up a small set of stairs in his arena and ring it. This is the second of the three Bells required to unlock the hidden area. Exit Guangmou’s arena through the other archway and follow the golden trail to the “Marsh of the White Mist” Shrine.

2.3. Bamboo Grove: Marsh of the White Mist

Upon reaching the “Marsh of the White Mist” Shrine, take a moment to explore the surrounding area. Across from the Shrine, you’ll find a tree with yellow flowers hanging from its branches. Interact with it to obtain a Luojia Fragrant Vine, a valuable item used to upgrade your Gourds, which provide healing and other beneficial effects.

As you continue down the path, you’ll witness a Snake Patroller harassing a friendly monkey named Shen Monkey. Defeat the Snake Patroller to rescue Shen Monkey, who will then lead you to his hidden shop. Shen Monkey’s shop is a crucial location for upgrading your Gourds and Drinks, significantly enhancing your healing capabilities throughout the game. Be sure to take note of this location and utilize it frequently.

Exit Shen Monkey’s cave and cross the wooden platform to reach a building containing a chest filled with valuable loot. Continue following the path, ensuring you are well-equipped, as you’ll soon encounter a challenging boss, the Whiteclad Noble.

The Whiteclad Noble is a formidable opponent with a variety of serpentine attacks and a vicious second form. Be wary of his long reach and unpredictable movements. Utilize fully charged Pillar Stance heavy attacks to deal significant damage. A reliable strategy is to combine the Immobilize spell with Wandering Wight’s spirit attacks, followed by the Red Tides Transformation to unleash a devastating combo before he can retaliate.

After defeating the Whiteclad Noble, explore the left side of the lake where you fought him. You’ll discover a flooded ravine that leads to the third and final Bell. Navigate through the ravine, defeating any wolves that stand in your path. Once you reach the Bell, ring it to be transported to the Ancient Guanyin Temple, the hidden area of Chapter 1.

Note: If you choose to skip the Ancient Guanyin Temple for now, you can head inside the structure behind where the Whiteclad Noble was located to proceed to the Black Wind Cave.

3. Ancient Guanyin Temple Walkthrough

Upon ringing the third Bell, you’ll be instantly transported to the Ancient Guanyin Temple, a hidden area shrouded in an eerie atmosphere. This temple holds a significant connection to Elder Jinchi, a powerful Yaoguai King who plays a crucial role in the chapter’s narrative.

As you enter the temple, you’ll find a Shrine where you can save your progress and prepare for the upcoming battle. Proceed deeper into the temple, and after a brief cutscene, you’ll face Elder Jinchi in a challenging boss fight.

Elder Jinchi’s attacks are similar to those of Wandering Wight, but he possesses a unique ability to drain the life force of nearby corpses to restore his health. To counter this, focus on attacking the corpses as quickly as possible whenever he attempts to siphon their energy. Interrupting this process is crucial for preventing him from regaining health and prolonging the battle.

Defeating Elder Jinchi will reward you with the Fireproof Mantle Vessel, a valuable item that grants you temporary immunity to fire damage. This will prove invaluable in the upcoming battle against the final boss of Chapter 1.

Once you’ve claimed your reward, you’ll be transported back to the location of the third Bell near the Whiteclad Noble arena. You can now proceed to the Black Wind Cave to continue your journey.

4. Black Wind Cave Walkthrough

4.1. Black Wind Cave: Cave Interior

To enter the Black Wind Cave, head inside the structure located behind the area where you fought the Whiteclad Noble. As you venture deeper into the cave, you’ll encounter a Wolf Assassin in a brightly lit area. Exercise caution and dispatch this formidable foe before proceeding.

Continue through the tunnel until you reach a fork in the path. The left path leads to a valuable Celestial Taiyi Pill and The Cliff Meditation Spot, the final Meditation Spot in Chapter 1. Take advantage of this opportunity to enhance your abilities before continuing.

Return to the fork and follow the right path. You’ll arrive at the “Cave Interior” Shrine, guarded by two Wolf Sentinels. Defeat these guardians and interact with the Shrine to rest and replenish your resources.

From the Shrine, proceed forward to confront the Black Wind King, a challenging humanoid boss and the true form of the Black Bear Guai. This formidable opponent possesses a tricky ability to transform into an invincible wind gust and charge at you. Mastering the timing to dodge these wind blasts is crucial for surviving this encounter. Be prepared to practice your dodging skills, as the final boss of Chapter 1 utilizes a similar tactic.

Defeating the Black Wind King will reward you with the Cloud Step spell, a valuable ability that allows you to transform into mist, evade enemy attacks, and launch surprise counterattacks. This spell will prove invaluable in navigating the challenging encounters ahead.

After claiming your reward, explore the area for any remaining loot and prepare to continue your ascent to the mountain peak.

4.2. Black Wind Cave: Outside the Cave

Upon reaching the “Outside the Cave” Shrine, you’ll embark on a challenging trek to the pinnacle of the mountain. The path ahead is fraught with peril, as you’ll encounter numerous enemies along the way.

As you ascend the mountain, be wary of a small area where you can drop down to find a chest guarded by a Wolf Assassin. Claim the chest’s contents and continue your climb.

The path to the summit is primarily guarded by Bullguards and Wolf Archers. The Wolf Archers can be particularly troublesome, as they harass you from afar with their ranged attacks. Utilize your newly acquired Cloud Step spell to quickly close the distance and eliminate them, or to create breathing room during intense combat situations.

Along the path, you’ll also find a valuable Celestial Nonary Pill, which provides a permanent increase to your maximum health. Be sure to collect this essential upgrade before proceeding.

The remainder of the ascent will primarily involve encounters with wolves. Defeat them and continue your climb until you reach the final Shrine, “Bodhi Peak”.

4.3. Black Wind Cave: Bodhi Peak

Upon reaching the “Bodhi Peak” Shrine, take a moment to prepare yourself for the final confrontation of Chapter 1. The summit is engulfed in flames, and the formidable Black Bear Guai awaits you in his true, monstrous form.

Black Bear Guai is a challenging boss who delivers powerful strikes with his massive paws. You should have a good understanding of his attack patterns from your previous encounter with his humanoid form, the Black Wind King.

The Fireproof Mantle Vessel obtained from Elder Jinchi will prove invaluable in this battle. Activate it immediately when Black Bear Guai slams the ground and unleashes a wave of flames across the arena. He will then transform into a gust of fiery wind and charge at you. Dodge his attacks relentlessly and retaliate with your own as soon as he reverts to his bear form.

Utilizing a combination of Pillar Stance heavy attacks, Immobilize spells, and Cloud Step for evasion will greatly increase your chances of success. Remember to manage your resources effectively and prioritize dodging his devastating attacks.

With perseverance and skill, you will emerge victorious against Black Bear Guai, claiming the Craving Eyes Relic as your reward. This marks the triumphant conclusion of Chapter 1 of Black Myth Wukong. Congratulations on conquering the Forest of Wolves and overcoming its formidable challenges!
