Entering Chapter 6 – Foothills of Black Myth: Wukong, you will encounter a unique Yaoguai Chief named Feng-Tail General. Completely different from typical boss fights, this encounter is actually a mini-game combined with QTE (Quick Time Event) designed to test the survival limits of the Destined One, focusing on two main factors: Stamina (the ability to sustain actions) and resistance to Burn damage. Your goal is not to defeat this giant Yaoguai, but to successfully snatch the special pair of antennae on its head to obtain the valuable Golden Feng-Tail Crown headgear. Therefore, thorough preparation in terms of stats, skills, and equipment before seeking it out is crucial to overcome this one-of-a-kind challenge.
Recommended Loadout
To overcome the Feng-Tail General challenge smoothly, thorough preparation is key. Do not underestimate this step, as it largely determines your chance of success. Here’s what you need to focus on:
- Stamina: Extremely important for the first phase of the challenge. When you cling to the Feng-Tail General’s antennae, your stamina bar will continuously deplete while it jumps. We recommend having at least around 320-330 Stamina to ensure you don’t get thrown off midway. Find ways to increase this stat through upgrades or collecting items.
- Vessel: Fireproof Mantle. This item is almost mandatory for the second phase. When activated, it makes you immune to Burn damage for a period, making the hardest part of the challenge significantly easier. Ensure you have acquired and equipped it.
How to Find Feng-Tail General
Finding the Feng-Tail General requires a bit of patience. Follow these steps:
- Starting Point: Begin from the Verdant Path Shrine (the nearest save point) in the Foothills area.
- Route: From the Shrine, move through the area where you faced (or passed by) the Supreme Celestial Inspector. Continue forward until you reach the edge of a small area where you can freely use the Somersault Cloud spell.
- Use Somersault Cloud: Activate the Somersault Cloud spell.
- Orientation: Immediately steer the cloud to the LEFT. You will head towards an area with a large lake or swamp, known as the Mantis-Catching Swamp.
- Approach the Location: Fly almost to the end of this watery area. Look for a high, somewhat barren-looking mound that stands out from the surroundings.
- Spot the Target: Look to the left of the mound; you will see the Feng-Tail General, a giant Yaoguai resembling a locust or grasshopper. It might initially be at a lower elevation.
- Wait for the Moment: Patiently wait a few seconds. The Feng-Tail General will perform a large leap and land precisely on the high, barren mound you are observing.
- Action: As soon as it lands on the mound, steer your Somersault Cloud directly above it. Time it right and land directly on the HEAD of the Feng-Tail General. Remember to deactivate the Somersault Cloud at the right moment to land successfully.
The Encounter: QTE Guide
This isn’t the time to fight, but to hold on and endure. Focus on the button prompts and your stat bars.
Phase 1: Stamina Test
Action: Quickly move close to the pair of large antennae on the Feng-Tail General’s head. As soon as the interaction icon appears, press and HOLD the Interaction Button (the button you normally use to pick up items or talk). Absolutely do not release it.
Process: Immediately after you grab hold, the Feng-Tail General will begin making powerful leaps, moving across different locations in the area (usually 2-3 jumps).
Challenge: Throughout this process, your Stamina bar will continuously and quite rapidly decrease.
Objective: Your task is to continue HOLDING THE INTERACTION BUTTON until the Feng-Tail General comes to a complete stop without your Stamina bar fully depleting. If Stamina hits zero, you will be thrown off and have to start over (return to the Shrine to rest). This is why you need sufficiently high Stamina (as mentioned, at least around 320-330) or to use support items beforehand.
Phase 2: HP & Burn Resistance Test
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT Action: When the Feng-Tail General stops jumping, you will have a brief moment. IMMEDIATELY, open the equipment menu and ACTIVATE the Fireproof Mantle Vessel if you have it equipped. This is the golden moment to use it.
Next Action: After activating the Mantle (or if you don’t have/use it), approach and interact with the antennae again. Note that the antennae are now BURNING fiercely. Press and CONTINUE HOLDING the interaction button.
Process: As soon as you grab hold the second time, you will start taking continuous Burn damage, causing your HP bar to gradually decrease. If the Fireproof Mantle is active, you will be immune to this damage for its duration.
Challenge: You need to hold the button long enough for the Destined One to perform the action of forcefully pulling and breaking the burning antennae.
Objective: Successfully break the antennae before your HP bar runs out. With the Fireproof Mantle, this phase is nearly risk-free. Without the Mantle, you will need a very large HP pool and high Burn Resistance stat from equipment, Bane Mitigation skills, or other items to survive long enough.
Completing Phase 2 means you have successfully conquered the Feng-Tail General challenge. Remember, the key lies in HOLDING THE BUTTON and thorough preparation of survival elements.
Immediately after completing the second phase QTE, the antennae you just snatched will transform into extremely valuable headgear: the Golden Feng-Tail Crown – a divine-tier equipment piece for Wukong.
The Feng-Tail General is not just a challenge but also holds deep significance in the world of Black Myth: Wukong, as the descriptive verse implies: “Fire tails on forehead high, Stalking prey on mountains high. The skilled avoid the battle cry, The fool roars with pride awry.” The game’s lore cleverly compares its wisdom to that of the Sage Stone Monkey after enlightenment, knowing to use strategy and intelligence instead of just relying on strength. With many eyes and being adept at leaping and dodging, the Feng-Tail General is described as knowing itself and its opponents, always seeking to avoiding powerful foes, displaying “a touch of the monkey’s cleverness.” This explains why the encounter is a test of preparation and endurance rather than combat, as it doesn’t want a direct confrontation but rather challenges your cunning. And the Golden Feng-Tail Crown you obtain perhaps symbolizes that very agility and flexibility.
