Hey everyone, while exploring Chapter 6 of Black Myth: Wukong in the Foothills area, you might encounter Jiao-Loong of Waves, an optional Water-type Yaoguai Chief that is extremely agile with tail whips and surprise attacks from underwater. Although an optional boss, defeating Jiao-Loong of Waves is well worth the effort for the valuable reward: the Waterward Orb, which significantly boosts defense while underwater, and it’s also a good opportunity to practice your skills. Additionally, the lore about the Jiao species – water-controlling creatures – and the story of the fisherman from Chen Village wanting to learn its magic somewhat explains this boss’s nature as a water deity.
How to Find Jiao-Loong of Waves
To find Jiao-Loong of Waves, you first need to ensure two conditions are met: you have defeated the Supreme Celestial Inspector (the previous boss in the area) and possess the Somersault Cloud skill (the fast aerial movement ability just acquired).
Once ready, start from the Foothills’ Verdant Path Shrine or from the large area right after you defeated the Supreme Celestial Inspector and obtained the Somersault Cloud. Standing at the cliff edge in this area, simply look straight down below, and you’ll see a rather large lake. The next step is simple: find a way down to that lake. You can use the Somersault Cloud to fly down or carefully jump/walk along a path down if available. The final key step is to move to the central area of the lake and step onto the water’s surface. As soon as you do, Jiao-Loong of Waves will emerge from below, and the battle begins!
Jiao-Loong of Waves Boss Fight and Guide
Phase 1: Fighting on Land (Boss Health > 50%)
This phase is primarily a duel on the water’s surface. Jiao-Loong of Waves has several attacks you need to watch out for:
Tail Whip: It can spin or flip its body to use its long tail to whip you. The range is quite wide. -> How to Dodge: Dash back or time a Dodge sideways.
Dash / Claw / Pounce: Fast, direct frontal attacks. -> How to Dodge: Dodging sideways is most effective.
Jumping Bite: The boss will leap into the air and dive down to bite you. -> How to Dodge: Dodge back or dodge as it’s about to land.
Roar: A small area-of-effect attack around itself. If hit, you’ll be Stunned for a few seconds, which is extremely dangerous if followed by another attack. -> How to Dodge/Counter: When you see it charging up to roar, move far back or quickly dodge out of the range.
Special Grab Attack: This is the most dangerous attack in this phase. The tell is very clear: It will turn its back to you and raise its tail high. If this tail hits you, it will grab you and perform a high-damage combo that you cannot escape. -> How to Dodge: As soon as you see it turn its back and raise its tail, dodge immediately! Absolutely do not let the tail hit you.
Phase 1 Attack Strategy:
- Golden Key: Use Heavy Attacks frequently! Jiao-Loong of Waves is quite weak to these attacks, easily becoming Staggered or even Knocked down onto the ground.
- Tip: As soon as you knock it down, it’s a golden opportunity to unleash damage. Make the most of this time.
- Utilize the Plantain Fan: As mentioned in preparation, this is the “secret weapon.” Activating the Plantain Fan while the boss is within the whirlwind’s range will keep it continuously knocked down. You can simply stand next to it and comfortably beat it down without fear of counter-attack.
- Positioning: Try to stay relatively close for easier attacks and counters, but always be wary of the roar and especially the grab attack.
Phase 2: Diving Underwater (Boss Health < 50%)
When its health drops below half, Jiao-Loong of Waves will change tactics, frequently diving into the lake and becoming Untargetable. Attacks in this phase are completely different:
Dive and Emerge Attack: It will move beneath the water surface and then suddenly lunge up to attack from a different location. Keep an eye on the water surface; wherever you see Ripples or Bubbles is where it’s about to emerge.
Underwater Tail Attacks: Multiple large tails (looking like tentacles) will suddenly emerge from the water and whip aggressively towards you. Sometimes multiple tails appear at once. This requires intense focus. Move constantly and prioritize dodging. Don’t get greedy with attacks if you’re not sure it’s safe.
Phase 2 Strategy:
- At this point, the top priority is defense and evasion. Dealing damage becomes more difficult.
- Watch the water surface carefully to dodge emergence attacks.
- When it uses tail attacks, move and dodge continuously.
- Look for brief moments when it has just emerged or is about to dive to counter-attack quickly, then regain a safe distance.
- If the Plantain Fan is off cooldown, you can still try to use it when the boss is on the surface, but it will be harder than in Phase 1.
Defeating Jiao-Loong of Waves grants you the Waterward Orb – an Epic Curio that significantly increases your defense in aquatic environments.
In summary, Jiao-Loong of Waves is a formidable optional Yaoguai Chief in the Foothills area (Chapter 6) that you can find after obtaining the Somersault Cloud. The key to defeating it lies in the effective use of Heavy Attacks and especially the Plantain Fan to control it on land, while focusing on dodging its underwater attacks by watching for ripples/bubbles on the water surface in the later phase. The most worthy reward is the Epic Waterward Orb, extremely useful for underwater battles. Good luck conquering this challenge and continuing your journey in Black Myth: Wukong!
