In Black Myth: Wukong, Zhu Bajie is not only a gluttonous disciple but also a “tough” opponent when “possessed” in Chapter 4, Webbed Hollow area. Don’t let his foolish appearance fool you, Zhu Bajie is one of the “trickiest” bosses. This guide will “dissect” the entire two battles, providing strategies, tips, and step-by-step instructions to “defeat” old Zhu, from preparing equipment, skills, to dodging each attack, ensuring you don’t miss any details.
Location
You will find Zhu Bajie for the first time at the Hut of Immortality, located in the Lower Hollow area of Webbed Hollow. From the Shrine in Lower Hollow, follow the only path, you will reach the Hut of Immortality.
After “escaping” at the Hut of Immortality, Zhu Bajie will “open the way” for you to a large muddy area. From the Shrine outside the Hut of Immortality, follow the newly opened cave path, you will reach the new “arena”.
Zhu Bajie Boss Fight and Guide
First Encounter – Hut of Immortality
At this point, Zhu Bajie is no longer the gentle “old Zhu” you once knew. He becomes aggressive, “stubborn”, and uses the 9-pointed Rake “skillfully” (though a bit… clumsy).
Three-Hit Combo: Zhu Bajie will swing the Rake three times in a row in the directions of left, left, then right. How to dodge: Time it and dodge to the right, right, then left (opposite to the direction of the rake swing).
Two-Hit Smash: Zhu Bajie will “charge” (with a small whirlwind effect under his feet) and slam the Rake down twice. How to dodge: 1st time dodge right, 2nd time dodge left. Be careful, if you get hit by the whirlwind, you will be stunned.
Acid Spit: Zhu Bajie spits acid in two ways: 3 or 5 streams at once. How to dodge: When you see him “bend” down, back away and find gaps between the acid streams to dodge.
Spinning Tornado: Zhu Bajie spins at high speed, turning into a tornado and moving around the arena. How to dodge: Run to the center of the arena and dodge in any direction when he gets close.
Leap Combo: Zhu Bajie jumps up, pauses for a moment, then slams the Rake down. After that, he will dash past and slam again, ending with a back kick. How to dodge: When he jumps, dodge to the right, then back away. Then, time it to dodge the slam and the back kick (can dodge left or right).
When the rake glows: Normal attack will be powered up, creating explosion or shockwave.
After taking enough damage, Zhu Bajie will “run away”. But don’t celebrate yet, the battle is not over!
Second Encounter – Muddy Area
This time, Zhu Bajie will “treat” you to a real “mud bath”. And believe me, it’s not “relaxing” at all!
Mud: It will slow down all your movements, making dodging more “difficult” than ever.
Mitigation: You can reduce the effects of the mud by using Sages Relic or a special Gourd Soak (if available). But don’t expect things to return to normal, the mud will still be a major “obstacle”.
Important tip: Remember, the mud does not slow down your sprint speed. So, in many cases, run instead of trying to dodge roll.
Phase 1
Instead of “plowing” the ground, his Rake will shoot out mud bullets.
Zhu Bajie will no longer be stunned after spinning into a tornado. Strategy: Still an active, cautious playstyle, but you need to be more “refined” in dodging due to the influence of the mud.
Zhu Bajie will transform into a giant carp and roll towards you. How to dodge: Time it and dodge forward (into the space below the fish).
Phase 2
Zhu Bajie will “transform” into a giant boar, and “rampage” in the “mud bath”.
Tar Explosions and Rams: Zhu Bajie will roar, causing the surrounding mud to explode, then ram continuously towards you. How to dodge: Stay away from the boiling mud spots, and time it to dodge to the side when Zhu Bajie rushes. After three rams, he will fall, creating an opportunity for you to attack.
Tar Transformation: Zhu Bajie transforms into a mud boar version, summoning two more mud boars to ram along. How to dodge: Dodge to the side when all three mud boars are about to hit.
Back Kick: Zhu Bajie turns his back and delivers a powerful back kick. How to dodge: Dodge to either side, or back away (but be careful).
Other forms of transformation
Carp: Zhu Bajie will swim around, then jump up and land, creating a shockwave. How to deal: Use Pillar Stance to block and counterattack.
Rhino: Zhu Bajie will charge with two copies on either side. How to dodge: Extremely difficult. Run back first to have more time to observe, then dodge to the side.
Mud Form: Zhu Bajie will disolve to a pool of mud and charges to you.
Weak point: The attack will only works if Zhu Bajie turn back to boar form.
Attack chance: After the whole transformation chain, Zhu Bajie will be stunned, it’s your chance to deal damage.
Tip: Use Transformation Spells for more “opportunities” to dodge if needed.
This phase is extremely difficult, requiring patience, concentration, and the ability to “adapt” flexibly. Don’t be discouraged if you “lose” a few times, try again and find the “rhythm” of the battle.
After successfully “overcoming”, you will receive the Jade Moon Rabbit Curio – a jewelry item that slightly increases damage reduction. This effect will be enhanced when equipped with Gold Sun Crow.
Defeating Zhu Bajie is not an easy “mission”, especially in the second battle. But with careful preparation, a reasonable strategy, and a little “stubbornness”, you can absolutely “defeat” this old Zhu.
Hopefully, this detailed guide has provided you with useful information, helping you confidently confront and “win” against Zhu Bajie. Don’t forget to practice skills, try different strategies, and discover more “secrets” of Black Myth: Wukong.
